Unlocking Mobile Value with User Interface

When you’re considering creating an app for your brand, it can feel like you’re in a rush to the app store. But in a competitive market such as yours, if you’re serious about what you’re doing, you need to consider what it takes to make a great app. And the trend today in creating a great app? UI development.

What is user interface design?

User interface design is between user experience and graphic design. In UI, you have to consider how your users will use the app and how your app looks. A good user interface design is the process of understanding how your users will interact with your app.

In the mobile app development, the ability to use gestures for shortcuts and other actions had created that sense of touch is called “haptics.” Mobile apps are built with a haptic interface and people can use gestures, like taps and swipes, to navigate from one page to another.

However, most people understand the single finger gestures like tap, swipe, and pinch but they don’t always remember the more complicated two or three finger gestures. Here’s a table that illustrates some of the more common gestures in the mobile interface.

The touch targets rules

When designing for mobile, developers need to be aware of the “touch target rules” or how much space a finger needs to make sufficient contact with the screen.

Part of graphic design UI is considering similar looking interface designs this is because of this touch zone. For example, when you use your iPhone, the thumb does the work and a user’s thumb can ordinarily only reach approximately one-third of the total screen area. Also, a thumb needs roughly 44 pixels or 1 centimetre for a “touch target.”

If you want to design a great, functional mobile app interface, design principles are hugely important. These design principles are guidelines that designers can use even when they use the best software UI design. So if you're considering mobile app designs you'd better keep reading.

1. Design should organise the user interface in a meaningful and useful manner for both the developer and the user.

2. Design should make simple, common tasks easy to do and should be clearly communicated to the user.

3. Design should make necessary options visible without distracting the user with unnecessary information.

4. Design should be able to keep users informed of actions or interpretations, errors and changes of condition that are relevant to them.

5. Design should reduce the need for users to rethink and remember each action to get to the task.

At the end of the day, a great UI design considers what your users will be trying to accomplish through user research when trying to design and build features that are very likely to be used on a mobile.
